Goals for the Initial PEN grant
Within the NHLBI-PEN project, the Hawker group will synthesize multifunctional polymer nanoparticles, both for imaging and radiation therapy. To be able to monitor the nanoparticles in animal studies, they will be functionalized with optically-active labels, chelators for radioactive 64Cu (PET imaging) or gadolinium (MRI imaging). Initial tissue targeting, to sites of acute vascular injury, will be based upon labeling of the surfaces of the nanoparticles with an αVβ3-targeting ligand.

Facilities
The Hawker group occupies two labs (total ~2000 ft2) in the Engineering II building and and the Materials Research Laboratory. Between both facilities, the group occupies 9 large fume hoods equipped with the necessary equipment to perform polymer synthesis and characterization. The group also has full access to all of the characterization equipment present in the MRL, a complete description of the MRL facilities can be obtained at http://www.mrl.ucsb.edu/mrl/centralfacilities/index.html.
